What is the newest NFL team?

The Houston Texans are the newest NFL team. They joined the league as an expansion team and played their first season in 2002. Their arrival took the league from 31 teams to 32 and led to the eight-division layout used today.

Since then, no team has been added. A few teams have moved to new cities instead:

  • Rams: moved from St. Louis back to Los Angeles in 2016.
  • Chargers: moved from San Diego to Los Angeles in 2017.
  • Raiders: moved from Oakland to Las Vegas in 2020.

Why divisions matter

Each team plays the three other teams in its division twice a season, once at home and once away. That makes six of its 17 games. The team with the best record in each division goes to the playoffs.

States with more than one team

California has three teams: the Rams, the Chargers, and the 49ers. Florida also has three: the Dolphins, the Buccaneers, and the Jaguars. Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland have two each. The Giants and Jets both use the name New York and share a stadium in New Jersey.
