Shakeel was born on 5 September 1995 in Karachi. He trained alongside future national teammates including Sarfaraz Ahmed and Asad Shafiq at the Pakistan Cricket Club. Babar Azam has referred to him as “Chota Don.”
The Test call-up that finally arrived at 27
Shakeel’s Test debut came in December 2022 against England. His maiden Test century arrived in January 2023 against New Zealand. He became the first Pakistani batter to score fifty or more in each of his first seven Test matches.
The double century that made him a household name
Shakeel’s signature innings arrived in July 2023 against Sri Lanka in Galle — an unbeaten 208, becoming the first Pakistani batter ever to score a Test double century on Sri Lankan soil.
The World Cup, and an unusual dismissal
Shakeel became the only Pakistani player ever to be given out “Timed Out” at international level.
