How the IPL points table works

Ten teams play each other in a league stage of 70 matches, with each side playing 14 games. A win is worth two points and a washed-out or tied-and-unresolved match earns one point each. When teams finish level on points, net run rate (NRR) separates them — the difference between the run rate a team scores at and the run rate it concedes across the season, which is why a heavy defeat can cost a side a playoff spot even if it wins the same number of games.

The playoff cut-off

The top four in the table qualify for the playoffs. Finishing first or second is a major advantage: those two sides meet in Qualifier 1 and the loser gets a second chance in Qualifier 2, while third and fourth play a straight knockout in the Eliminator. In most seasons 16 points has been enough to qualify and 18 has guaranteed a top-two finish, though tight seasons have gone down to NRR on the final day.

IPL points table FAQs

How many points does a team get for a win in the IPL?

Two points for a win, one point each for a no-result or an unresolved tie, and zero for a defeat.

How many teams qualify for the IPL playoffs?

Four. The top two play Qualifier 1, third and fourth play the Eliminator, and the loser of Qualifier 1 meets the Eliminator winner in Qualifier 2.

What is net run rate and why does it matter?

Net run rate is a team’s runs-per-over scored minus runs-per-over conceded across the season. It decides the order of teams level on points, so big-margin wins and narrow defeats both matter.

How often is this points table updated?

Automatically every two minutes during the season, straight from the official match feed.
