He spent years bowling tape-ball cricket on the street, showed up to a franchise trial in his mid-twenties essentially as an unknown, and within about two years was bowling at 150-plus kilometres an hour for Pakistan.
Rawalpindi, a welder’s son, and no formal cricket pathway
Rauf was born on 7 November 1993 in Rawalpindi, into a working-class family. The turning point came in 2017, when a 24-year-old Rauf showed up to audition for Lahore Qalandars’ player development programme. Having played almost nothing but tape-ball cricket up to that point, he caught everyone’s attention purely through extreme raw pace.
An Australian summer that changed everything
In December 2019, Melbourne Stars signed him for the Big Bash League as a replacement for the injured Dale Steyn. In just his second match, he took a five-wicket haul. On 8 January 2020, he took a hat-trick — becoming the first Pakistani bowler and the first Melbourne Stars bowler to do so in BBL history, with one delivery clocked at 151.3 km/h.
International debut, then Covid complications
Pakistan moved fast. Rauf made his T20I debut against Bangladesh on 24 January 2020, and in November 2020 became the first bowler in T20I history to record two four-wicket hauls within his first three matches.
Becoming Lahore Qalandars’ PSL enforcer
Back home, Rauf became central to Lahore Qalandars’ PSL success, playing a major role in the franchise’s back-to-back titles — taking 16 wickets in the 2022 edition and 17 in 2023.
